W. H. G. Chambers, 90, prominent citizen of Texas for sixty-eight years, and father of Walter R. Chambers of Georgetown, died at his home in Mullin on Monday, April 17 at 7:30 a.m. after an illness of several years. Funeral services were held at the Davis-Morris Funeral Chapel in Brownwood, conducted by the Rev. C. D. Wooten, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Brownwood. Grandsons acting as pallbearers were Gordon Chambers of El Paso, Harold Glen Chambers and J. W. Newton of Abilene, Ferrell Newton of Clyde, Weldon Newton of College Station and Grigsby Mills of Houston. Burial was in Wolf Valley Cemetery in Brown County. Mr. Chambers, son of the late Spencer and Nancy Chambers, was born in Marshall County, Alabama on February 27, 1871. He became a Christian early in life and was a lifelong Universalist. He was married to Miss Nancy Susan Shirley in Alberville, Alabama, on March 24, 1891, and to this union, three sons and six daughters were born, all of whom survive. Mr. Chambers taught school in Alabama for a time then came to Texas in 1893 and taught school in Brown County for a number of years. He served on the local school board at Cross Cut, Texas for a number of years and on the Brown County board of trustees, also, for a number of years. He served on the school board at Mullin for several years. Mrs. Chambers did on September 19, 1925. Mr. Chambers resided in Brown County from 1893 until 1937 when he moved to Mullin. He was marred to Miss Birdie Burkett on August 1937, who survives. The three sons surviving are W. R. Chambers of Georgetown, Weldon Chambers of La Grange and O. B. Chambers of Early. The six surviving daughters are Mrs. Lola Woolridge of Brownwood, Mrs. Lillie Mills and Mrs. Annie Keeler of Goldthwaite, Mrs. Ira Newton and Mrs. Opal Byrd of Cross Cut and Mrs. Allie Triplett of Mullin. Other survivors are 21 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild, two brothers, W. R. (Bill) Chambers and W. H. Chambers of May and other relatives and a host of long-time friends. |
