BARBARA JEAN MARTIN

Barbara Jean Martin, 57, died after a long battle with cancer on Friday, August 18, 2000.

She was born on January 24, 1943, in Sweetwater, Texas, and graduated from Trent High School in 1961.  She was a longtime big country and Abilene resident.

Barbara was the 42nd District Court Administrator for the Honorable Judge Don Lane for twelve years before resigning to channel her energies in an area she felt was more needed.  For eleven years, Barbara dedicated all of her time and energy to the war against drugs through raising money, counseling, and funding programs and seminars for the youth of America.  Her time was also spent educating youth on many other growing problems such as teen drinking, teen pregnancy, and teen violence.

In 1999 Barbara accepted the position of Service Area Director of the Noah Project, a shelter for battered women and children.  She was a very dedicated employee who wanted desperately to make a difference, and did so until her illness rendered her disabled.

She was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.

Barbara is survived by her mother, Louise Canady of Trent, Texas; one sister and brother-in-law, Kayla and Donnie Anders of Abilene; one brother, Jim Canady of Round Rock, Texas; three children, Teri Hudson and son-in-law, Randy, of Moran, Texas, Todd Martin of Irving, Texas, and Tiffany Martin also of Irving, Texas.  She had two grandchildren Clay and Lexi Hudson, both of Moran, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, at 4:00 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Stan Allcorn officiating.  Graveside services will follow immediately in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Trent, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Hendrick Hospice Care, P.O. Box 1922, Abilene, TX 79604, or Noah Project, P.O. Box 875, Abilene, TX 79604.
