Bernard E. (Bernie) Watlington, (Lt. Col USAF Ret.) passed away March 30, 2000.  He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Bobbie; children, Sherry Sly and her husband, Leonard, Kimberly Menegus and her husband, Ray, Trish Wall-Watlington, Jay Watlington and his wife, Debbie, and Neal Watlington and his wife, Swarupa; eight grandchildren, Michelle Green, Jesse Sly, Jason Sly, Seth Watlington, Shjorn Watlington, Trevor Watlington, Jason Watlington, and Troy Watlington; his mother, Carrie Watlington; brother, Tom Watlington and wife, Linda; sister, Jean Webb and her husband, Henry, all of South Boston, VA.  Bernie graduated from the West Point Academy in 1959 and served in the USAF for 22 years, where he worked primarily in the area of analysis and assessment of space nuclear power safety issues.  He was also a voting member of the Interagency Nuclear Safety Review Panel for space nuclear power applications and terrestrial nuclear storage facilities.  He then was employed by Lockhead Missiles and Space Co., as an Advanced Systems Engineer Specialist coordinating safety analysis for a major weapon system before joining Science and Engineering Associates, again consulting in the area of nuclear storage facility safety issues.  Bernie then worked for Northrop Grumman as an engineer in the Electromagnetic and Radiation Effects Hardening Division in California until his death.  Throughout his career as a nuclear and electrical engineer, he had the opportunities to offer significant contributions to numerous projects, consulting on such diverse projects as coordination of space station experiments to research and application of stealth technology for the development of the Stealth 117 Fighter and Stealth B-2 planes.  He was an avid gardener and loved anything to do with computers.  His wry sense of humor and quiet friendship will be missed by friends, co-worker and family.  He was very much loved.  He will lie in state at Fitzgerald and Son, Sunday, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., with family available for visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Services and burial will be held in South Boston, Virginia. Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE, are in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Bernard E. Watlington

Mr. Bernard E. Watlington of 3815 Valerie NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico died Thursday, March 30, 2000.  Born in South Boston on July 5, 1935, he was 64 at the time of his death.  He was the son of Mrs. Carrie Ratliff Watlington and Mr. Junius Adelbert Watlington, Sr. and was married to Mrs. Barbara Jean Watlington.

He graduated from Halifax County High School in 1954 and from the US. Military Academy at West Point in 1959.

He served for 22 years in the US Air Force where he worked primarily in the area of analysis and assessment of space nuclear power safety issues. He received his Masters degree in nuclear engineering from Wright Patterson Air Force Base School and was also a voting member of the Interagency Nuclear Safety Review Panel for space nuclear power applications and terrestrial nuclear storage facilities.

He was then employed by Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., as an advanced systems engineer specialist, coordinating safety analysis for a major weapon system be_fore joining Science and Engineering Association, again consulting in the area of nuclear storage facility safety issues.

Also surviving is his mother, Carrie Watlington of South Boston and a brother, Tom Watlington and wife, Linda of South Boston and a sister, Jean Webb and husband, Henry of Hopewell.

Graveside services for Mr. Watlington will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2000 at Grace Baptist Church cemetery with mili_tary rites at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Doug Martin officiating. The fam_ily will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of his mother. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Halifax County Cancer Association or a charity of choice.
