James R. Cox Daily Oklahoman, The, December 28, 2002
James Robert, MSGT USAF retired, passed away peacefully on Dec. 20, 2002 at the age of 85. He was born in Tuttle, OK on June 19, 1917. James served his country most of his life. His service began in World War II with the US Army's 10th Mountain Division in Italy, where he was wounded and received a purple heart. In Jan. 1948, he joined the USAF and served as a medical technician in the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. While stationed at McClellan AFB, CA, in March of 1963, James was credited with saving the life of a letter carrier by rescuing him from his overturned vehicle and holding pressure on an injured artery until they arrived at the hospital. Since the overturned postal vehicle was leaking gas, the Air Force deemed James' deed an act of heroism, and awarded him the Airman's Medal. He always tried to help others and was a true hero, especially in the eyes of his family. James was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Marie; parents James Jasper and Zora L. Cox; sisters: Dixie, Floy, Flora affectionately called "Ted", and Nanny Jane. He is survived by his children: daughter Mozelle M. Anson and husband Ed of Louisville, KY; son Denver A. Cox and wife Ann of OKC; grandchildren: Trey Anson, Stephanie Zellich, Eva Shott, Carol Cox, Clay Cox, and Curtis Cox; great grandchildren: John Corey Zellich, Lucky Anson, and Matt Shott. James is also survived by his brother Ray Cox and wife Mary Lee of San Antonio, TX; sister Nell Herndon of OKC; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. We will miss his kind and gentle spirit, but are comforted in knowing that he has gone on to a much better place. Family will receive visitors Monday at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Services to celebrate his life will follow at 2:00 PM Monday in the South Colonial Chapel of Vondel Smith. VONDEL L. SMITH & SON MORTUARY 6934 S.
