Two killed in separate car crashes; one driver suspected of being intoxicated

The Bakersfield Californian

Friday August 22, 2003, 11:22:55 PM

Two people were killed in separate wrecks Friday.

The first accident occurred around 12:15 a.m. when the driver of a pickup heading east on Highway 58 near Sand Canyon Road in Tehachapi allowed his vehicle to drift off the road, said California Highway Patrol Officer Tim Singer.

The pickup became airborne, Singer said, and landed on Sand Canyon Road near the highway and burst into flames.

Singer said the male driver, the only occupant of the pickup, died at the scene. County coroner's officials said they will have to use dental records to identify the man, whose body was burned beyond recognition.

The reason the man drifted off the road has not been determined, Singer said.

A second fatal accident occurred after 8 a.m. on Highway 119 near Elk Hills Road.

Jerry Kirk Anders, 41, of Bakersfield was declared dead at 8:10 a.m. at the scene of the crash.

CHP Officer Rick Jorgensen said Ezequiel Monarrez, 30, of Bakersfield was driving a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle west on Highway 119 and allowed it to drift into the eastbound lane.

Monarrez's car clipped one oncoming car before hitting another head-on, killing Anders, officers said.

Jorgensen said Monarrez was taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment of his injuries and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
