Philip Crosby: Admiral became lawyer, championed the underdog

07/18/2003

By RAE DeSHONG / The Dallas Morning News

Adm. Philip Crosby traded in his commission papers for a law license when he retired after 34 years in the Navy. Mr. Crosby died Monday at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.

Services for Mr. Crosby, 80, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Park Cities Baptist Church, 3933 Northwest Parkway, where he was a member.  Burial will follow at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

The retired rear admiral lived in Dallas for the last 24 years and graduated from Southern Methodist University's law school in 1982.  He practiced law until 1997.

"Phil came to work for us in 1985," Dallas lawyer Troy Murrell said.  "He was a great man.  He worked hard."

"It didn't matter what we asked him to do, he jumped into it wholeheartedly."

Mr. Murrell said his colleague brought maturity and sound judgment to the legal field and never shirked representing an underdog.  Mr. Crosby practiced civil law and did supporting research for his firm.  He retired in 1997 from Hill, Held and Metzger in Oak Lawn.

As a supply officer in the Navy, Mr. Crosby was responsible for getting equipment to sailors and Marines in times of peace and conflict.

His son, James P. Crosby of Shaker Heights, Ohio, said his father would consider his expertise to be aircraft supply because he spent eight years at the Naval Aviation Supply Office in Philadelphia.  Officers and civilian workers there are responsible for "keeping the Navy and Marine Corps in the air."

Retired Navy Capt. Ralph Parrott said Mr. Crosby was a successful leader because he shared his knowledge, was willing to learn from others and thoroughly understood the supply and logistics business.  Mr. Parrott worked under Mr. Crosby for two years in Philadelphia.

"He was the finest officer I ever worked with, and I worked with many," Mr. Parrott said.

Mr. Crosby was raised in Sherman, where his father was a math teacher.  He joined the Naval Reserves while in high school and attended the U.S. Naval Academy during World War II, but he didn't see combat.  Mr. Crosby also attended the Navy Supply Corps School at Harvard and later earned a master's degree from Lowell Textile Institute in Massachusetts.

One of his accomplishments was researching cold-weather clothing that was used during the Korean War.  This was one of the things he was most proud of "because of lives and limbs saved," his son said.

Other assignments included serving as commanding officer of the supply depot at Subic Bay in the Philippines during the height of the Vietnam War and as deputy director of the Defense Logistics Agency, which supplies the Department of Defense with "everything from underwear to food to trucks."

Mr. Crosby was a member of the Society of Logistics Engineers.  He was honored by the Sherman Ex-Students Association in 1998 as one of the city's distinguished ex-students.

Besides his son, Mr. Crosby is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bobby Ruth Hamilton Crosby of Dallas; son John Hamilton Crosby of Richmond, Va.; one brother, James Thomas Crosby of Castro Valley, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association National Center, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas 75231; Leukemia Association of North Central Texas, 6060 North Central Expressway, Dallas, Texas 75206.
