Brown clouds eerily reminiscent of those from the Dust Bowl rolled across the ground in late May, whipping up dirt that had not settled during the dry year. On an early Saturday night, motorists along the state's western stretch of Interstate 70 were blinded by the blowing dirt that rolled in dark clouds, causing black-out conditions and zero visibility. The first accident happened around 6:10 p.m. A Denver man, Hubert Dean Stewart, was a passenger in a vehicle that had stopped on the highway because of the blowing dust, Another vehicle, driven by Edward Brown, 50, Commerce City, Colo., crashed into the one Stewart was riding in. Stewart died in Goodland. In the second accident, State Sen. Stan Clark died after being crushed between two tractor trailers. Police say just that 8 miles from his hometown of Oakley, Clark struck the rear end of a tractor- trailer truck he was following as the truck slowed to pull onto the shoulder of the interstate during the dust storm |
