Joe Charles Horton Lawton Constitution - (Sep/9/2005)
FREDERICK -- Memorial service for Dr. Joe Charles Horton, 80, Frederick, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gray Gish Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Les Banks officiating. Dr. Horton died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at his home in Frederick. He was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Hollis, to Joseph Jones Horton and Viva Storhoff Horton. He was raised in Hollis during the depression and graduated from Hollis High School in time to enlist in the Army and serve in World War II. While serving in the Army as a Ranger, he was wounded in Northern Belgium after the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated with a degree in zoology. He completed pre-med requirements for the State Board of Examiners in basic sciences May 27, 1950. He completed requirements for the degree of doctor of medicine on June 2, 1952, and was licensed as a medical doctor June 5,1952. He completed a rotating internship at St. Anthony Hospital on June 30, 1953, and completed a surgical residency at the same hospital June 30, 1954. From 1959 through 1961, he completed training in general surgery. He was admitted to the International College of Surgeons on Oct. 4, 1975, and was admitted to the American Board of Surgery on April 4, 1978. He was admitted as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in Chicago on Oct. 25,1979, and received a Physician's Recognition Award from the American Medical Association in 1972. He was elected a life member of the Oklahoma State Medical Association after his retirement Feb. 6, 2000. He was a physician emeritus of the Oklahoma Medical Association at the time of his death. While attending medical school at the University of Oklahoma, he was made a charter member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and graduated first in his class. He served on the City Council and the Frederick Airport Board, and was a member of the Lions Club and Frederick First Baptist Church. He was a pilot for many years. Survivors include his wife, Janet Horton, of the home; his children and their spouses: Charles and Jacqueline Horton, Altus; Carol and Sam Griffin, Chickasha; Perry and Sandie Horton, Manitou; and John Horton, Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren: Sam J. and Saradee D. Griffin, Daniel Griffin, Matthew Griffin, Kristin Horton Archer, Nick Horton and Samantha Devlin; and six great-grandchildren: Hunter Archer and Gunner Archer, Devyn Horton, Darrian Devlin, Tamara Devlin and Angelia Devlin. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas Horton; and a great-grandchild, Lacie Horton. Dr. Joe Charles Horton, 80, of Frederick died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, in Frederick. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Gray Gish Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Les Banks officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Gray Gish Funeral Home, Frederick. Dr. Horton was a general surgeon and served in the army during World War II as a Ranger. Survivors include his wife, Janet Horton of the home; four children, Charles Horton of Altus, Okla., Carol Griffin of Chickasha, Okla., Perry Horton of Manitou, Okla., and John Horton of Oklahoma City; one brother, Paul Horton of Hollis, Okla.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. |
