Howard Glen Teeters, resident of Graham Creek Estates, Foley, Ala., died Thursday morning, July 22, 2005.

Teeters received a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University, a master's in school administration from George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tenn.; Rank I in school counseling from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

After serving his country during World War II, Teeters became a teacher and later principal for schools in Southeast Missouri.  He ultimately became area supervisor of state schools for handicapped children with Missouri State Department of Education.

Teeters was a charter member and deacon of South Baldwin Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Before relocating to Alabama, he served on the board of directors for both the Lutesville Methodist Church and Methodist Church at Caruthersville, Mo.

During his distinguished career as an educator, he was member/chairman, Community Action Agency, Caruthersville, Pemiscot County and Southeast Missouri Region.  He served as president of Pemiscot County School Administrators Association, and served on the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges Accreditation Team for a number of years.

His passion for special needs students prompted him to establish, assist with funding, and serve on the board for five sheltered workshops in Southeast Missouri.  He was also instrumental in the funding and construction of five state schools for severely handicapped in Southeast Missouri.  In 1982 he was honored for his contribution to Missouri education with the dedication of the Doniphan, Mo., State School for Severely Handicapped in his name.

Teeters instilled his love of lifelong learning to his four children, resulting in two doctorates, one advanced degree in computers and business and a national board certified teacher.

Teeters is survived by his wife, Joan Teeters; four children, Cheryl Teeters of Marquette, Mich., J. Marc Nattier (Christina) of Foley, Shelly Mize (Allen) of Birmingham, Ala., and Sarah Miller (Christopher) Summerdale, Ala.; and three precious grandchildren: Zachary and Sidney Miller of Summerdale, and Carson Mize of Birmingham.

A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2005, at South Baldwin Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Keller Road in Foley.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Community Hospice in lieu of flowers.
