 Mary Virginia Plaugher Comstock Binford

Bakersfield Californian on 8/30/2006

Binford, Mary Virginia Comstock

Mother, Grandma and GG Mary Virginia Binford, 89, passed away peacefully with her family and friends by her side.  She was born on July 16, 1917 in Taft, CA to Shem and Ursula Plaugher.  Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Norman Plaugher and Cecil Plaugher; her sister, Bessie Davis; and by her husbands, Harvey Comstock, Sr. and Roy Binford.  She is survived by her son, Harvey Comstock and Tammy Alford; her seven grandchildren, Jamie Comstock, Krystal and Dennis Bracken, David Comstock, Matthew, Jeffrey and Josh Ruthledge; her three great-grandchildren, Breann Bracken, Wyatt and Karsyn Comstock. Mary also leaves behind her step-children, Neal and Mary Kay Binford of Houston, TX and Noel and Haley Binford of TX and their families.  Mary had a very close and loving relationship with her niece, Barbara Stumbaugh of Apple Valley whom she would call her own; as well as many, many cherished friends.  Mary was a longtime member of The Native Daughters of the Golden West, Miocene Parlor #228, a member of the Presbyterian Church of Taft, the West Kern Oil Museum as well as her monthly birthday group.  Mary was crowned Taft's first Queen of the Black & Gold Festival.  Mary and Roy Binford owned and operated Jo's Restaurant in Taft for many years.  She loved the Lord, feeding people, card games, talking on the phone and bragging about her family.  She never met a stranger and she had a special interest in helping others when she could.  Everyone who knew Mary will miss her spunky personality and her unconditional loving, generous heart.  Mary had a blessed and loving life and in January of 2003 she was blessed with a fourth generation great granddaughter, Breann Bracken. Breann was the candle on the cake which lit up her life.  Funeral services for Mary will be held on Friday, September 1st, at 10:00 a.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Native Daughters of the Golden West, Miocene Parlor #228, 506 Pierce St., Taft, CA 93268 or to a favorite charity.  Special thanks are given to Dr. Tang and the staff of Memorial Hospital for the wonderful and loving care given to Mary.  Mary Virginia Comstock Binford July 16, 1917 - Aug. 27, 2006 Erickson & Brown Funeral Home
