COOPER George B. Cooper, 98, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2006. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Cooper; mother, Maude H. Cooper; older brother, Frank Cooper; and older sister, Floy Cooper Haralson. He is survived by his wife, Callie Ree; son, Austin, both of Albuquerque; son, Tom and family of McKinney, TX and daughter, Anne and family of Nashville, TN. George was born June 16, 1908 in Roswell, where he lived his early years. As a teenager, the family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1927. After several years in private business, he joined the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Carlsbad in 1936. In 1938, he met, wooed, and married Callie Ree Jackson of Lubbock, TX. In 1949 he was transferred to a Bureau of Reclamation project in Altus, OK. In 1952 he transferred to the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project of the USBR in Moses Lake, WA where he served for 22 years, completing a career of 36 years in the USBR. When the Farmer’s Association took over that portion of the Columbia Basin project, they asked George to work for them, performing much the same duties. In 1974, George retired from the irrigation project and his wife retired from public school teaching in Moses Lake, and they moved to Albuquerque to be with relatives. George was born and raised in the Christian Church, and joined his wife in the Church of Christ in 1946 in Carlsbad. He was very active in congregations in Carlsbad; Altus, OK; Moses Lake, WA; and the University Church of Christ in Albuquerque. In Moses Lake, he served as a Deacon and later as an Elder. In the University congregation in Albuquerque, he served for several years as a hospital minister. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Thursday, December 7, 2006, 2:00 p.m., at Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Albuquerque Christian Children’s Home, 5700 Winter Haven Dr. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120.
