Robert D. Gilmer, Sr.

Robert D. Gilmer, Sr. of Wichita, Kansas, retired Boeing photographer and web developer, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008 after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma cancer at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 57.

Robert was born the son of Harold and Dorothy (Merritt) Gilmer on Sunday, April 15, 1951 in Wichita, Kansas.

On August 7, 1970, Robert and Sharon Laughary were united in marriage at Wichita, Kansas.  Together they celebrated nearly 38 years of marriage.

Robert began his career as a photographer in the United States Air Force during Vietnam.  Following his military service, he graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in Radio, TV and Film and a minor in Journalism.  While in college, he was a DJ for the campus station KMUW and T-95.

He later began a career at Boeing as a black and white photographer.  While there he was instrumental in many projects including video filming and web development.  He retired from Boeing after a 20+ year career.

Robert enjoyed spending his free-time playing the guitar, being an avid gardner and going trout fishing.  However he was a family man whose kids and grandkids were very important to him.  He was a loving husband and caring father who will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Gilmer, son, Robert Gilmer, Jr. and his wife Monica, daughter, Sara Garcia and her husband Mario, parents, Harold & Dorothy Gilmer and grandchildren, Jacel Gilmer and Adeline Garcia all of Wichita, Kansas along with numerous siblings.

Memorial services for Robert will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2008 in New Testament Baptist Church, 1317 McCormick, Wichita, Kansas.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place.

A memorial has been established in his loving memory with The Bright Spot for Health, 3100 N. Hillside, Wichita, Kansas 67219.  Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
