James Wesley McClung, 91, of Joplin, passed away at 7:53 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at St. John's Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. Born March 19, 1916, in Stroud, Okla., he was the son of the late Roscoe C. McClung and Geraldine Brown McClung and had lived in Joplin since 1961. He worked in the oilfields for E.B. Hall and Co. in California, where he was a member of the International Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union. After moving to Joplin, he worked for Farmer's Chemical until retiring in 1961. He served in the peacetime U.S. Army for three years and was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a member of Harmony Heights Baptist Church. On Sept. 30, 1961, he married Aretha Eloise Arnce at Pryor, Okla. She survives at the home. Four brothers, a sister and a nephew preceded him in death. In addition to his wife, survivors include four nephews, William (Bill) McClung, Allen Dale McClung, Dr. Herb McClung and Rev. Charles McClung; three nieces, Mitzie Mauritz, and Melissa and Betty Butler; a brother-in-law, Bob Arnce; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 4, at Harmony Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Charlie Burnett officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. |
