Robert Jay Sexton

Robert Jay Sexton, 58, a resident of The Dalles, died at his home in The Dalles on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

He was born Oct. 24, 1950 in Caldwell, Idaho, the first of four sons to James Rollie Sexton and Rose Marie Stickley. He attended grade school in Hermiston and Caldwell, Idaho, graduating in 1969 from Vallivue High School in Caldwell, and took several business classes at Judson Baptist College in The Dalles.

He served in the United States Navy on active duty overseas from January 1970 to November 1978 and then the United States Army National Guard from 1979 until his retirement in 1992. He was a Wasco County Sheriff’s Deputy and worked as a corrections officer from 1980 until 2001 when he had to retire for medical reasons.

He married Rebecca Ann Goodner Davis in 1974, they later divorced. In 2001 he married Diane Sharon Pederson Johnson. He was an active member of The Dalles Eagles Aerie #2126 and served as an officer on a local and regional level. He also was a life member of the North American Hunting Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved the outdoors, wandering in the woods, fly tying, reading, time on the computer, ceramics, crocheting and keeping his yard picture perfect.

He is survived by his wife of 8 years, Diane; his mother, Rose Dechand; his father, James Sexton and stepmother, Bernice; his two adopted daughters from his first marriage, Heather and Heidi; Diane’s three children, Kimberly, Gary and Russell; his siblings, Ronnie Lee Sexton, Tony James Sexton, Bryan, Gary, Dale, Diana, Cheryl, Jeanice, Lisa, Leon and David; all Dechands and their spouses and children, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He has a very large extended family of brothers, sisters and kids, Harvey and Maxine, Gary and Pan, TJ and Kim, Kenny and Chris, Bren, Ed, Brenda, Sue, Bob and Ginger, Miss Ellie, LeeRoy, Joe, Sarah, Laurie, his Heart of Hospice Family and his Celilo Center family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Ray Sexton, his sister, Deborah Annette Dechand, his mother-in-law, Harllie Ordella Tyler and both sets of grandparents.

Private cremation was held at Win-Quatt Crematory in The Dalles with arrangements under the care of Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.

A memorial ritual, service and luncheon will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at The Dalles Eagles Lodge at 2006 W. Sevent St., The Dalles.
