He was born on Aug. 31, 1917, in White City, Kan.  He graduated from Wichita State University in 1938.  [John died on 5 Feb 2010]

He began his career as a journalist at the Wichita Beacon and married Marjorie Elisabeth Hawley in 1940.  They moved to Louisville, Ky. in 1941, where he was a reporter for the Courier-Journal and ultimately the director of the Urban Studies Center at the University of Louisville.

He and Marge moved to Green Valley in 1984.

He is survived by his daughter Diane; son John Douglas Jr.; six granddaughters and one grandson; and six great-grandchildren.
