Bernita Hopkins

HERRIN -- Bernita L. (Bard) Hopkins, 87, of Glen Carbon, formerly of Herrin, died at 4:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, at her home.

Bernita served as deputy city clerk under Charles Campbell, and in 1964, she was appointed city clerk in Herrin and served until retirement in February 1979.

She was born Feb. 27, 1924, in East Prairie, Mo., a daughter of the late J.B. and Mary P. (Lindley) Bard.

She first married Dallas Beers, and he preceded her in death.  She later married Glen Hopkins, and he also preceded her in death.  Bernita is survived by a brother, Gene Bard and his wife, Shirley, of Edwardsville; five sisters, Frankie Pulhamus of Denver, Patsy Givens of Burnsville, Minn., Sue Broussard and her husband, Donald, of Baton Rouge, La., Barbara Cohen and her husband, Louis, of Glen Carbon, and Mary Gabler and her husband, Jack, of Edwardsville.

Bernita was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Brown, Loleta Wing, and Fostine Fugate; and four brothers, J.R. "Sonny" Bard, Marvin, Jack, and Russell "Ike" Bard.

A private graveside service was Wednesday, Sept. 7, in Herrin City Cemetery.

Family requests memorials be made to American Cancer Society .

Weber and Rodney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
