Kansas City Star, December 20, 2012

BETTY ANN DeVRIES

Betty Ann (Speiser) DeVries, 77, was reunited with her late husband on Dec. 16, 2012, after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia earlier this year.  Betty was born to Ida and George Speiser.  She was the youngest of three children and a graduate of Westport High School.  In her youth, Betty was an accomplished roller skater and was even invited to join the Skating Vanities roller skating show in New York.  Betty worked as a secretary for nearly 30 years and retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad.  It was there she met a dashing Dutchman named Warren DeVries.  The two married and enjoyed over twenty years together at Lake Pomme de Terre, MO.  When they weren't traveling and visiting friends,  Betty managed to squeeze in a few frames on three different leagues at the Nemo Bowling Alley.  Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Vernon, and her husband.  She is survived by her sister, Elaine (Jack) Richardson, son, Vernon 'Ben' Burkett, daughter Brenda (Bill) Wolcheski, several nieces and nephews, and two grand dogs, Moxie and Penny.  Betty will always be remembered as a kind, caring, and giving optimist who saw the bright side in every situation.  A Memorial Service will be held at Butler Meyers Funeral Home, 6300 Parallel Pkwy, KCK, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012.  The family will receive friends 1 p.m. Saturday, 12/22/12 until time of service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Betty's memory to the Salvation Army or to the Kansas City, KS Community Orchestra at www.kckorchestra.org.  The family would like to thank Dr. Slovick and the staff at Providence Medical Center for their efforts in caring for Betty, particularly the nurses and aides on the fifth floor.  The staff at Grace Hospice was a great help, too.  Condolences and memories may be expressed by visiting:
