Life Legacy

A time has been set aside to celebrate and honor the life of Michael T. Mike Hixson, on Saturday afternoon, April 16th, at Rice Funeral Service.  His brother-in-law, Terry Joe Rader will lead family and friends in their time of remembering.  Mike passed away on Wednesday, April 13th, 2016.  He was 60.

Born in Claremore, Oklahoma on August 23rd, 1955, Mike was one of Obie Oscar and Dorothy Ray (North) Hixson s six children and their only son.  He grew up and spent his youth in Claremore.  Following his high school graduation with the class of 1973, Mike remained at home while attending then Claremore Junior College.  With quite a family loyalty to Oklahoma State University, he became a Cowboy and earned some college hours in Stillwater.  But with his interest in teaching, he chose to complete his education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.  He graduated in 1981 with a degree in business education.  Immediately following, he returned home to Claremore and put that degree to use as a high school business teacher, a position he held for twenty-five years before retiring in 2008.

A solid work ethic was instilled that only grew stronger as Mike grew into an adult.  And having all those sisters caused a sense of nurturing that prepared Mike to be a wonderful family man.  Because he had such drive, he worked two jobs for several years.  All the while he also volunteered as a fireman at both the Tiawah and Tri-District Departments.  When he retired as an educator, he began working full time at the Gordon Golf Course some would say he worked full time at both places for a good while.  For seventeen years Mike gave his golf course job his full effort, never asking a younger employee to do a task he wasn't willing to do himself.

Though he was dedicated to his duel careers, he was most devoted to his family.  Mike became a proud and doting daddy to little Charlotte when she came into the Hixson's hearts and home in 1980, when she was just three years old.  Six years later son, Sam was born.  Mike was such a hands-on daddy, often caring for his infant son as long as he could before heading off to the classroom.  Sometimes the evidence of a morning feeding was still on his shirt at the end of the workday.  There was no denying that he loved nurturing his little ones as much as possible.  When Mike and Laurie Judd married on a July 4th, 1995 Claremore wedding ceremony, her four children became his.  This blended family grew so close that all six of Mike's children felt an unwavering love and security from their daddy.  In recent months, as he became Opa (grandpa in German) life got even richer.  One needed only seconds to see little Alivea Lyric and Opa together to know that she had stolen his heart.

If you were one of Mike's whether family or friend, you knew you could count on him.  Protective, loyal, provider of comfort when needed, comrade and confidant these were Mike Hixson to those who knew him well.  Mike passed away on Wednesday, April 13th, 2016.  He was 60.  He will be missed by all who knew him but none more than his treasured family who include his wife, Laurie of their home in Claremore; his 6 children, Charlotte Richardson and husband Jack of South Carolina, Sam Hixson of Claremore, Eric Judd and wife Erica of Oklahoma City, Stephanie Judd of Claremore, Andrea Judd and Andrew Hinds of Catoosa and Tamera Judd his daughter that preceded him in death; one grandchild, Alivea Lyric Hinds of Catoosa and another grandchild on the way; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Sharre and Terry Joe Rader, Susan and Ron DeWeese, Sheila Hixson, Shirley and Edgar Hutchinson and Carmen Montgomery and nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
