Janet A. Hicks Horton Altus Times from Oct. 3 to Oct. 4, 2016
Janet A (Hicks) Horton passed from this life on September 28, 2016, the third of 4 children born to Harry C. Hicks and Maude Reeves Hicks. Janet was born August 3, 1925 in Hollis, Oklahoma. Janet graduated from Hollis High School in 1944. She married the love of her life, Joe Charles Horton on September 28, 1945 while they were both students at the University of Oklahoma. Janet interrupted her University education to work in Oklahoma City while Charles attended Medical School. After Charles' graduation in 1952 the couple relocated to Frederick, Oklahoma which was her home until moving to Altus in 2011 following the death of her husband. As most people in Oklahoma of her generation, she saw and lived through three life changing events: The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era and World War II. The privation and extreme shortages caused by those events made her as much from necessity as from shear enjoyment become an accomplished seamstress. She found her artistic passion in quilting and created from scratch many beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She supported the endeavors of the many family businesses and cooked for and helped entertain visiting hunters at Triple H Hunting Lodge. She operated a pie and pecan store in Frederick called Jan's Gone Nuts, touting the pecan industry. After the death of her husband she oversaw and directed the farming, hunting and ranching operations of Triple H until her death. Additionally she enjoyed for many years membership in several social and service organizations. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, baseball coach, rodeo and football Mom and kept the family fed and clothed. It is no great surprise to anyone that as an escape from the daily grind she loved to get lost in a great novel. She was an avid reader and cherished her collection of books. She loved animals and as a child had several dogs and horses. At various times she fed and cared for dogs, cats, horses, sheep, and cattle that others; not to mention any names; vowed to care for. She accomplished all of this mostly with a smile. She was loved and will be missed. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Joe Charles Horton, MD., her older brother Leon C. Hicks and a beloved grandchild Lacie Horton. She is survived by two Sisters: Margie Wilson of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Sue Green of Fort Worth, Texas; her 4 children: Charles P. Horton and wife Jacqueline, of Altus, Oklahoma, Carol Griffin and husband Sam of Chickasha, Oklahoma; Perry Horton of Tipton, Oklahoma, and John Horton of McCloud, Oklahoma; her six grandchildren; Samantha Devlin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Sam J. Griffin and wife Saradee of Goldsby, Oklahoma, Daniel Griffin and wife Austin of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Matthew Griffin and wife Megan of Chickasha, Oklahoma, Kristin Archer and husband Brian of Cashion, Oklahoma, Nick Horton and wife Nicki of Crescent, Oklahoma; and her 14 great grandchildren: Devyn Horton; Darrian Devlin; Hunter, Gunner and Avery Archer; Haddee, Emmee, Libbee, Gage, Jack, Maggie, Sam P., Sutton and Charlotte Griffin.
