Obituary for Germaine Rogers McKenzie

Germaine Rogers was born in Denver, Colorado on January 21, 1932.  Growing up, and in early adulthood, she was known as Germaine, but she later assumed the shorter name of Lynn, thinking it would be easier for people to remember.  Germaine grew up in Denver with her younger brother, Wayne Rogers.  Germaine (or Lynn) had a close relationship with her mother, Bess, who passed away in 1974.

On June 18, 1950, Lynn and Wilfred McKenzie were married at South Denver Church of Christ.  In the following years, they were blessed by the births of four sons: Steve, Tim, Mark and Joel. During these years, Will and Lynn lived in various locations in Colorado, and then moved to Carlsbad, NM for a couple of years.  They moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1968, where they worked with the North 4th Street Church of Christ, which became Riverside Church of Christ in 1980.  In all this time, Lynn served graciously as the preacher’s wife and a beloved member of the congregation.  One of her spiritual gifts was teaching the children’s Bible classes.  She influenced generations of children in the way she lovingly shared Jesus with kids and their families.  Another spiritual gift was cooking and hospitality.  It gave her great joy to welcome family and friends in her home, and she took food to innumerable people over the years.  Lynn was a good cook but an especially good baker.  Pecan, pumpkin and coconut cream pies were her specialty, and her family was always blessed by her Christmas cookies.  She was often told she could open up a bakery if she wished.

In spite of years of physical suffering, Lynn’s faith remained strong, and she continued to find ways to love and bless others.  She went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, May 28, 2016, with her loving husband, Will, standing by her side.  Her children and grandchildren prayerfully surrounded her bedside while she walked peacefully into the arms of Jesus.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 66 years, Will, as well as their sons: Steve (wife Aimee), Tim (wife Carma), Mark (wife Dawn), and Joel (wife Jo).  She leaves a legacy of love in her 15 surviving grandchildren: Christina McKenzie Willenbrock (husband Brad), Bonnie McKenzie, Laura McKenzie Hudson (husband Shane), Matt McKenzie (wife Jennifer), David McKenzie, Nathan McKenzie, Annie McKenzie Gomez (husband Leo), Zhanna McKenzie, Ella McKenzie, Cato McKenzie (wife Hannah), Olivia McKenzie Hicks (husband Matt), William McKenzie, Joselynn McKenzie, J.L. McKenzie, and Jordan McKenzie.  She is preceded in death by two grandchildren, Mikal Amanda McKenzie and Josiah David McKenzie. Lynn and Will also have six great-grandchildren: Braden, Amalia, and Elliah Willenbrock, Jesse and Caitlin Davis, and Cadence Joy McKenzie.  Two more great-grandchildren are expected this year.  Lynn is also survived by her brother, Wayne, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews, and many brothers and sisters in Christ.

Lynn dedicated her life to serving the Lord.  A life-time labor of love was spent at Riverside Church of Christ.  Donations may be made in her honor to the Riverside church, www.riversidecoc.net, or to the Albuquerque Christian Children’s Home or the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in Portales, www.nmcch.org

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Riverside Church of Christ, 3100 La Orilla Road NW.  A private interment will follow on June 1, 2016.
