Edgar Vernon Mayfield

Luyben Dilday Mortuary

Edgar Vernon Mayfield
December 19, 1930 - October 30, 2017

Ed Mayfield was born on December 19, 1930 to Everett & Birdie Mayfield in Dewar, Oklahoma.  The Mayfield’s were a farming family with twelve children; six boys and six girls.  His family moved to Modesto, California in 1942 due to the Great Depression and the results of the Oklahoma Dust Bowl.  Following high school, Ed served our great country in the United States Air Force for three years before marrying the love of his life, Frankie Dell Horton.

Ed and Frankie were destined to be together as they each were born in Oklahoma and ended up living in the same neighborhood after both of their families relocated to California.  They met as youngsters while playing sandlot baseball with other kids in the neighborhood.  Ed kept his eye on Frankie and eventually asked her Father for permission to marry her.  (PERMISSION GRANTED!)  They were married on June 25, 1950 and settled in Lakewood where they had three children, Randy, Pam, & Eric.  Ed worked for the Chrysler Corporation for 20 years before the plant was moved to Detroit.  Ed didn’t want to uproot his young family, so he began a second career as a skilled mechanic for the City of Lakewood where he would retire after 19 years.

When Ed and Frankie both retired, they enjoyed bowling & golfing together as well as traveling the world with family and friends.  When not on a cruise ship or an airplane, Ed loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, & great grandchildren.  He especially loved coaching his sons in the Lakewood Youth sport’s program where he volunteered for fifteen years earning the mayor’s award for coaching.  In addition, he loved attending sporting events and school functions for his grandchildren.  It was evident to all who knew Ed that he was very proud of his family and spoke of them quite often.

Ed was loved dearly and although he will be greatly missed, we know that he is resting peacefully with our Lord & Savior which gives us comfort.

Edgar Vernon Mayfield is survived by his loving wife of 67 years; Frankie, his children; Randy (Karen), Pam (Chris), & Eric (Jamie), grandchildren; Chad (Jennifer), Jordan, Justin, Hayley (Chad), Ashlyn (Derek), Ryan, Lindsey, Chelsea (Amil), & Jared, greatgrandchildren; Connor, Cate, Madison, Payton, Hayzel, Presley, Everleigh & Harper, siblings; Charles, Joanne, Wilma, Willis (twins) & Juanita.
